Why These 10 Beat a Random 100

It's tempting to start with a big vocabulary list, but not all words pull equal weight. These 10 show up in nearly every conversation, combine with other words to form full sentences on their own, and give you an immediate sense of progress — a much better return on your first hour of studying than 100 random nouns.

The Top 10

DarijaPronunciationMeaning
السلامsalamhello

بغيتbghitI want
واخاwakhaokay
بزافbzafa lot / very

Why This Order Matters

Notice that half of these aren't nouns at all — bghit (I want), machi (not), and wakha (okay) are function words that let you build actual sentences almost immediately. Bghit atay ("I want tea") is a complete, useful sentence on day one; a random noun in isolation isn't.

Bzaf deserves special mention: it's an intensifier that stacks onto almost anything — zwin bzaf (very beautiful), ghali bzaf (too expensive), 3ayan bzaf (very tired). Learning one word that amplifies dozens of others is a much better use of your time than learning ten more standalone adjectives.

Putting Them Together

  • bghit atay, 3afak — I want tea, please
  • fin lhammam? — where's the bathroom?
  • machi mzyan — not good
  • shukran bzaf — thank you very much
